The Most Exciting Trip You'll Ever Plan
Your honeymoon is the chance to take the trip you've been dreaming of for years. But with all the pressure to "get it right" and everything else on your plate, it's easy to get stuck.
That's because a honeymoon is rarely just a simple hotel booking. It's a full itinerary of transportation, beach clubs, boat days, restaurants, spa appointments, and experiences. Which means a lot of researching, planning, budgeting and booking! And when you say "we'll figure it out later," that can mean sold-out properties, higher prices, and full restaurants, which is just more stress in a process that should be fun!
So let me take a little bit of pressure off, because while your honeymoon is a big, important trip, it doesn't have to be the only special trip you ever take. And if you can't swing a big trip right after the wedding, take a mini-moon, and do the honeymoon when you have a little more time, money and energy saved up.
Where to Start
I've planned honeymoons for hundreds of couples, here's advice and best practices to guide you out of the state of overwhelm.
Decide what kind of honeymoon you want
There are six key types of honeymoon couples. Pick which one resonates with you both.
Decide when you want to travel
Immediately after, or take a mini-moon and save it for later. Just factor in destination seasonality into your plans.
Set a realistic investment range
Things can add up quickly across luxury hotels, premium experiences, seamless transportation, and special touches.
Book early to lock down your hotels
Typically that means 8 to 12 months ahead. I've also curated some of the most exciting 2027 hotel openings to plan your trip around.
Hand off the details
If you'd rather not carry another planning project (excel spreadsheet, 50 tabs open, and social media rabbit holes), then hand off the details to an expert. That's what I'm here for.

Honeymoon type 01/06
European Summer
This is the honeymoon of bygone romance. Long seaside lunches, a boat day exploring hidden coves of crystal clear water, and warm evenings where you can dress up, have the scene if you want it, but with plenty of time for private moments.
Who this is for
Couples who want romance with style and atmosphere, with just enough itinerary to feel like you're exploring without ever feeling overplanned.
Where to go
The classics are classic for a reason: coastal Italy, the South of France, the Balearics, and the Greek Islands. They feature insane natural beauty, that mediterranean water, incredible hospitality, culture in spades, and some of the most beautiful luxury hotels in the world. For more up-and-coming destinations, consider Corsica, Croatia, Turkey, Slovenia, Malta, and Montenegro.
The best hotels for honeymooners lean into the boutique glamour: balconies, terraces, beach clubs, and good dining. They're adults-leaning and intimate with excellent service. In these areas, the hotel gives you access and amenities, so investing somewhere special is key.

When to go
June through August is peak season for pricing, availability and crowds. September and early October still give you the warm water, and the crowds have thinned.
Book by
10 to 12 months out for peak season. A June 2027 honeymoon is best booked by late summer of 2026.
Pairing idea
City and coast is the classic structure: two or three nights in Rome, Paris, or Madrid to start, then the rest of the trip by the sea.
Honeymoon type 02/06
Safari
Cinematic, intimate, and once-in-a-lifetime special. Mornings start with coffee delivered to your tent before a game drive, days are spent watching wildlife in its natural habitat, and evenings end around a fire beneath more stars than you've ever seen.
Who this is for
Couples who want the honeymoon to feel unlike anything they've done before, and who love classic romance, proximity to nature, and that once-in-a-lifetime special feeling.
Where to go
East Africa (Kenya and Tanzania, including the Great Migration) and Southern Africa (South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe). For couples wanting something truly once in a lifetime, Rwanda is an incredible add-on for gorilla trekking. I usually recommend 5 to 7 nights for the safari portion, then layering in a city, wine-country, or beach extension.
Small luxury camps where the service feels intuitive, some with fewer than ten tents. Privacy, extraordinary guides, and more luxury than the word "camp" suggests. For honeymooners I especially love private concessions and reserves: fewer vehicles, more space, and better chances at elusive sightings like leopards and cheetahs.

When to go
June through October is the classic safari season with the Great Migration in full swing. January and February are excellent for East Africa and Rwanda.
Book by
12 or more months out. This is the earliest-booking category in the guide, because the best camps have single-digit room counts.
Pairing idea
Safari plus beach is the classic, and safari plus Cape Town and the Winelands is my favorite for food-and-wine couples.
Honeymoon type 03/06
Tropical Paradise
Crystal clear water, sandy beaches, cocktails, and absolutely nothing you have to do. This is the honeymoon for couples who want privacy, indulgence, and ultimate relaxation to soak in and enjoy their time together after a whirlwind wedding weekend and planning process.
Who this is for
If your dream is a private pool, a beach day, stunning scenery, resort wear, and some water-based activities, this is your trip. It also works great for couples who only have between 5 and 10 days for their honeymoon.
Where to go
The classics: French Polynesia, Anguilla, St Lucia, Turks and Caicos, St Barths, and Hawaii. For something a little different, look at Mexico's quiet luxury coast and the Caribbean islands of Mustique, Antigua, and the BVIs. If you're up for the long haul, try the Maldives, Mauritius, the Seychelles, or Fiji.
This is the category where the hotel really is the trip: overwater villas, private plunge pools, serious spas, adults-only pools and restaurants, and the kind of easy luxury where your biggest decision is lunch. Suite and villa categories matter most here, so the room upgrade is worth it.

When to go
Seasonality makes a big difference here. The Maldives shine November to April, the Caribbean December to May, and French Polynesia May to October.
Book by
For top resorts during peak season, plan on 9 months out. You can get away with 6, but you might have to be more flexible on where you go.
Pairing idea
A city stopover on the way to break up the flights, like Tokyo before Fiji, or Dubai before the Maldives. Otherwise, this is not a multi-stop itinerary kind of trip, unless you want a split stay!
Honeymoon type 04/06
Romantic Adventure
Active days, dramatic scenery, with luxury hotels, wellness, and some relaxation baked in. This is the honeymoon that feels like the start of a lifetime of adventures together.
Who this is for
Couples whose idea of romance is hiking to a glacier viewpoint, trekking through the jungle, or gliding through a fjord, but who still want a beautiful hotel, a great dinner, and a spa waiting at the end of it.
Where to go
The classics: Patagonia, New Zealand, and summer in the Alps. Also wonderful: Scandinavia, Brazil, Peru, and Southeast Asia combinations that mix trekking, temples, river cruising, and islands across places like Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam.
Intimate lodges in extraordinary landscapes. The properties here are small on purpose, often just a handful of rooms, and the best ones pair big days outside with luxury amenities at night.

Pairing idea
For honeymoons, you definitely want to pair the adventure leg with a slow, relaxing and luxurious finish. Patagonia, then Chilean wine country.
Honeymoon type 05/06
Culture & Food
Atmosphere, cuisine, design, and places that connect you to a new culture and heritage. This is the honeymoon where the memories are a private chef dinner, a market tour, city wandering, cafe hopping, shopping, and more.
Who this is for
Couples who plan trips around restaurants, love beautiful design, and would rather have one perfect day in a city than a week by a pool.
Where to go
The classics: Japan, Portugal, Basque Country, and Morocco. Other destinations that fit this brief well are Sri Lanka, India, Chile and Argentina.
The best hotels here really lean into sense of place of where you're going: ryokans in Japan, riads in Marrakech, design-forward city hotels, wine hotels and estancias, and properties where dining is integral to the experience. In this category the hotel is part of the immersion, as much a cultural experience as the streets around it.

Spring and fall for Japan, Portugal, Morocco, and Basque Spain. November to March for India and Sri Lanka. Argentina is at its best in the southern spring and fall.
Book by
8 to 10 months out for most of these. Japan during cherry blossom season is the exception, plan on 12 months, and even then the famous ryokans go fast.
Pairing idea
Balance a city-forward trip with a slow landing: Tokyo with a ryokan in the countryside, Marrakech then the coast at Essaouira, Buenos Aires then Mendoza.
Honeymoon type 06/06
Winter Magic
Cozy, cinematic, and seasonal: firelight, snow out the window, and a spa after a day outside. This is the honeymoon that feels like living inside a holiday film, in the best way.
Who this is for
Couples who love winter, skiing, apres-skiing, drinking red wine by the fireplace, arctic adventures, and snowy scenery.
Where to go
The classics: the Alps, the Dolomites, and Europe's Christmas markets. Also wonderful: Japan ski (Niseko and Hakuba give you powder and culture in one trip), aurora itineraries, and Nordic winter lodges across Finnish Lapland.
Built for cocooning: fireplaces, ski-in ski-out access, serious spas, long dinners, and glass-roofed rooms where you can watch for the northern lights without leaving bed.

Alpine ski plus a European city dressed for the holidays, or Japan ski plus Tokyo and a ryokan with private onsens.

Choose your trip type and destination, and secure the hotels. This is the first step to take, because the most special properties get booked up in advance, especially if they're boutique and intimate.

The earliest bookers
Safari camps, festive weeks in the Alps, and Japan in cherry blossom season. Twelve months, sometimes more.
If you're already inside the window
Shorter booking windows can of course be accommodated. The key, as with anything, is flexibility.
The Mini-Moon
Sometimes the smartest honeymoon plan is two trips. A few unhurried days somewhere easy right after the wedding, then the big trip months later, when the season is right for the destination you really want and you have the energy, money and time off to enjoy it.
My rule for mini-moons is keep it simple: either driving distance or a quick flight from the wedding destination. Find a nice resort with lots of amenities, a spa, pool, beach access, good restaurants and dining. You really don't need an itinerary here, just unwind, relax and enjoy.

Common Honeymoon Mistakes
Even the most organized couples make the same honeymoon mistakes, and they're all preventable.
Waiting too long to book
The most romantic rooms, the suites with plunge pools and sea views, sell out first at small properties and safari camps. Waiting usually means higher prices and fewer options.
Doing too much in too little time
Five cities in ten days looks exciting on paper but feels like a marathon in real life. Fewer bases and longer stays give you time to actually enjoy the hotels you're investing in.
Underestimating the in-between
Transfers, ferries, small flights, and train connections add up, and when they're not planned well you spend more of your honeymoon in transit than you need to.
Planning it like a regular vacation
A honeymoon carries more emotional weight and more moving pieces than a normal trip, and treating it like a quick hotel search leads to missed opportunities and extra stress.
